ESA confirmed to European Spaceflight that it is "no longer considering the Ariane 6 Block 3 evolution," citing no current "programme need or justification" for it, after member states approved only 145.94 million euros of the 304.4 million euro Ariane 6 adaptations envelope requested at the November 2025 ESA Ministerial Council, a 52% shortfall, per European Spaceflight. Block 3 would have added the ICARUS carbon-composite upper stage, which SpaceScout reported Aug. 8 was already understood internally to be cancelled and which was designed to raise Ariane 6's payload to the lunar surface, including capacity for ESA's Argonaut lander, to 1,800 kg. ESA said the Astris orbital transfer vehicle, expected around 2029, will provide additional capability instead, per European Spaceflight. In a follow-up Aug. 24, an ESA spokesperson told European Spaceflight that Ariane 64 Block 2, featuring the P160C boosters and Vulcain Aft Bay evolution, is Argonaut's current baseline configuration; specific safety adaptations will be required only for future Argonaut missions carrying a Radioisotope Power System, not for the lander's first mission, which will not carry one. The spokesperson said the adaptations "relate to specific safety measures required for launching payloads with radioisotopic power systems."

Ruling out a more powerful Ariane 6 variant leaves Europe without a heavier-lift answer to Falcon 9, New Glenn, and Vulcan for the rest of the decade, a constraint ESA's own director general flagged this month when he raised concerns about Europe's launcher capacity through 2030. It also narrows the payload margin available to ESA's Argonaut lunar lander and any future European missions that would have used the extra performance. Settling on Block 2 as Argonaut's confirmed baseline, and flagging the nuclear-payload safety work still owed for later flights, is a concrete early marker of the qualification path ESA and ArianeGroup face before radioisotope-powered European landers can fly.
