FAA seeks input on new US spaceport sites and launch corridors

The FAA's spaceport and launch-corridor comment window closed Oct. 26, and SpaceX's own filing on docket FAA-2026-9736 said the company anticipates conducting 10,000 launches a year by itself, framing the FAA's 2035 industry-wide forecast of about 10,000 total launches and reentries as a company-specific target, per TeslaNorth and WCCFTech. SpaceX argued the FAA's "current air traffic control structure and processes are outdated and cannot support a materially higher launch or reentry cadence than today's levels," which it put at 182 licensed launches and 7 licensed reentries in 2025; the company proposed integrating its own Cleared platform, which carries real-time launch-status and airspace data, into FAA flow-management tools so hazard zones could shrink dynamically instead of locking out large, fixed airspace blocks. SpaceX also said Cape Canaveral Space Force Station alone could support 450 launches a year if other operators matched its cadence, and recommended relocating small launch vehicles elsewhere to preserve capacity at Cape Canaveral and Kennedy Space Center. Elon Musk said separately that the 10,000-launch figure "is just from Starbase Louisiana," meaning SpaceX's own total expectation across all sites is higher still.

why it matters

The RFI was an early step, not a decision, but SpaceX's comment is the clearest public marker yet of the cadence gap between what the agency is planning for and what SpaceX alone says it needs; the filing does not authorize any new flights, and FAA licensing, environmental review and air-traffic integration still have to catch up before those numbers become real capacity.
