OrbitAID plans a chaser-and-target mission in Q1 2027 to prove its full in-space refueling sequence, per Payload.
what happened
OrbitAID Aerospace, an Indian satellite-servicing company, told Payload it will launch two satellites, a chaser and a target, to low Earth orbit in the first quarter of 2027 to demonstrate its complete satellite life-extension process: inspection, autonomous docking, fuel transfer and orbital raising of the target satellite in one mission. CEO Sakthi Kumar said most RPO demonstrations to date have qualified only one piece of that sequence in isolation, and that OrbitAID moved from satellite design to launch readiness in 11 months using its own hardware, software and docking interfaces.
why it matters
In-space servicing remains mostly unproven outside a handful of US and Japanese demonstrations, so a successful full-sequence Indian RPO demo would widen the field of companies life-extension customers can choose from and support OrbitAID's stated plan to move into geostationary-orbit commercial servicing, where the company says discussions are already underway.
