what happened

Diffraqtion said Aug. 31 it raised more than $5 million in new pre-seed funding from Lockheed Martin Ventures and Sumitomo Corporation's Presidio Ventures, along with SBI US Gateway Fund with Plug and Play, Collaborative Fund and TekVentures, taking its total funding past $10 million. The Massachusetts-based company first closed a $4.2 million pre-seed round in January with QDNL Participations, milemark·capital, Aether VC and ADIN, plus a DARPA SBIR Direct-to-Phase II contract.

why it matters

Diffraqtion builds quantum-imaging cameras that aim to match the resolution of larger optics using smaller, cheaper lenses, for both Earth observation and space-domain-awareness payloads. The new funding pays for the company's first hosted payload in orbit, and Lockheed Martin Ventures' participation signals prime-contractor interest in the sensor technology ahead of any government award.
