Helogen plans to fly its HEL-IOS autonomous biomanufacturing platform on two separate missions in October, per Payload. The first will produce biopolymers for orthopedic applications such as shoulder rotator cuff and knee meniscus repair scaffolding on an unannounced reentry vehicle, with materials recovered afterward. The second, with partner LambdaVision, will manufacture proteins for artificial retinas aboard a D-Orbit spacecraft. Both missions launch on SpaceX vehicles. Helogen CEO Shishir Bankapur told Payload sterility, traceability, and accountability are the biggest challenges on each mission, and the company's HEL-IOS platform previously won a NASA TechLeap prize. Helogen plans eight missions total over the next 12 months, about three-quarters of them for its own internal product development.
