what happened

Telesat Government Solutions and Cailabs US signed a collaboration agreement Sept. 1 to explore integrating optical inter-satellite links on Telesat Lightspeed LEO satellites with Cailabs' optical ground systems, and to pursue joint studies and demonstrations for U.S. Government opportunities including space data relay services, per Telesat's own release. Telesat's Lightspeed network is being built with roughly 900 optical inter-satellite link terminals using TESAT SCOT80 hardware, the same terminal family Cailabs' ground stations already interoperate with.

why it matters

It positions Telesat's still-under-construction Lightspeed constellation as a candidate for US government optical data-relay work, a market currently being pursued by several LEO operators, though the agreement is exploratory with no government contract yet awarded.
