Chang Guang completes 19-satellite 3D mapping constellation
Chang Guang Satellite Technology
Chang Guang Satellite says its new 19-satellite fleet is the world's largest dedicated 3D-mapping constellation.

what happened
Chang Guang Satellite Technology, operator of the Jilin-1 Earth observation constellation, completed a 19-satellite constellation dedicated to 3D mapping, which the company says is the largest system of its kind in the world, per China News Service (ecns.cn). The company said the system supports single-, dual-, and multi-satellite stereo imaging from different angles, with a two-satellite formation able to capture a strip up to 1,600 kilometers long in one pass and a single stereo session covering more than 20,000 square kilometers, producing digital surface models, digital elevation models, and realistic 3D models.
why it matters
3D stereo mapping is a distinct product tier from standard 2D optical imagery, competing with Western providers like Vantor's WorldView-3D for infrastructure, urban planning, and disaster-response customers who need elevation data, not just imagery. A dedicated stereo sub-fleet this large gives Chang Guang a scale argument for that market segment as China's commercial EO sector keeps expanding capacity faster than global demand in some segments.
