NASA's Isaacman pushes back on calls to commercialize every program
Per NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman: not every NASA problem has a commercial fix.

what happened
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman posted a lengthy reply on X responding to a LinkedIn op-ed by former NASA senior advisor Phil McAlister, who had argued NASA was "about to lose its way" in low Earth orbit given SpaceX's reported Falcon 9 retirement plans and Boeing Starliner's continued grounding. Isaacman wrote that "if the objective is to force an economy out of every NASA endeavor, then NASA should probably sit inside the Department of Commerce," and that NASA "cannot simply slap the word 'commercial' on every problem" and assume a market exists when it doesn't.
why it matters
Isaacman's remarks signal where his NASA draws the line on commercialization even as it leans on commercial crew and cargo, and EO and comms procurement, as models elsewhere. For companies positioning around ISS transition, CLD, and LEO transport contracts, this is a marker of which programs the administrator sees as not yet ready for a market-based approach.
