BlackSky named exclusive imager for $1 billion Altair-Next Gen AI satellite network

BlackSky Gen-3 satellites will image for a $1 billion, 50-satellite AI-enabled constellation unveiled at the Paris Space Summit.
what happened
BlackSky said September 9 it was named the exclusive provider of very-high-resolution electro-optical satellites for a new international satellite constellation, announced at the International Space Summit in Paris alongside French President Emmanuel Macron. The initiative, led by a consortium of Marlan Space, Loft Orbital and Mistral AI with backing from the UAE and France, is funded by a stated $1 billion investment and will combine BlackSky's Gen-3 optical satellites with radar and other sensors across a 50-satellite constellation serving France, Europe and the UAE. BlackSky did not disclose its own contract value; further initiative details are expected later this year. Per Via Satellite, the Altair constellation is expanding from 10 to 50 satellites, with the first 10 already in production and launches beginning October 2026; Orbitworks, the Loft Orbital-Marlan Space joint venture, is manufacturing the satellites in Abu Dhabi, and MaiaSpace has been selected as the preferred launch provider. The constellation targets maritime domain awareness, wildfire detection, disaster response and security for ports and critical infrastructure.
why it matters
The deal makes BlackSky the exclusive optical supplier for a sovereign-backed constellation explicitly framed as AI infrastructure, extending its country-entity and government partnership model beyond earth observation into compute-linked satellite programs. For Marlan Space's Orbitworks joint venture with Loft Orbital, it adds a named imaging partner to a project that already carries UAE and French government backing.
