what happened

ESA awarded The Exploration Company a 760 million euro contract under Phase 2 of its ALADDIN initiative at the International Space Summit in Paris on Sept. 10, per European Spaceflight and AstroSpace.it, confirming the award a French Presidency document had revealed a day earlier. Of the total, 310 million euros covers the initial Nyx demonstration mission to the ISS, targeted no later than Q2 2029 and launching on Ariane 6, with 450 million euros in options for two further service missions. Private investors, via Exploration Company's $450 million Series C, cover 40% of the demonstration's financing, with ESA providing the remaining 60%. ESA Director for Human and Robotic Exploration Daniel Neuenschwander said the contract "officially launches Phase 2 of ALADDIN."

why it matters

ESA built a financial incentive worth up to 50 million euros into ALADDIN for participants using a European launch vehicle, so picking Ariane 6 positions Exploration Company to capture that bonus; the confirmed award, and its financing split, is the clearest sign yet that a five-year-old startup has become one of Europe's primary bets for autonomous ISS cargo return.
