what happened

U-Space, a French space system prime contractor, and Tenchijin, a Japanese Earth-observation data company, signed a memorandum of understanding at the International Space Summit in Paris to jointly deploy a next-generation infrared Earth observation space system and future constellation, per 01net.it. U-Space will design, manufacture and deliver the space system; Tenchijin will operate it and commercialize thermal data for infrastructure monitoring, water management, agriculture and climate risk. The MoU follows bilateral agreements CNES and JAXA signed in April.

why it matters

It extends France-Japan commercial space cooperation into a new infrared Earth observation system, giving Tenchijin its own dedicated satellite capacity to commercialize land surface temperature data rather than depending solely on existing agency satellites like ALOS-4.
