Poland's PGZ and ICEYE sign pact to build sovereign satellite system
PGZ · ICEYE
PGZ and ICEYE signed a letter of intent for a Polish-built satellite system Prime Minister Tusk called a step toward "a Polish Starlink."

what happened
Poland's state-run defense group PGZ and Finnish SAR satellite maker ICEYE signed a letter of intent on September 11 to jointly develop Polish satellite capabilities from 2026 to 2030, Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced at the MSPO defense exhibition in Kielce. ICEYE will act as technology partner and PGZ will organize Poland's domestic industrial base; the effort builds on ICEYE's existing MikroSAR program, which has already delivered SAR reconnaissance satellites to the Polish military. Per Bankier.pl, PGZ first vice president Arkadiusz Bak called the deal strategic and long-term, and Tusk said the process could culminate in a Polish equivalent of Starlink for military communications. No financial figure was disclosed.
why it matters
Poland is already the largest national contributor to the EU's IRIS2 constellation and a repeat ICEYE customer; formalizing a path toward a domestically built and maintained satellite system, framed explicitly around reducing reliance on Starlink for battlefield communications, gives ICEYE a state-industrial partner in a NATO frontline country as it pushes beyond SAR imaging into comms-adjacent infrastructure.
