KDDI signs Asia's first Starlink Mobile V2 service contract
KDDI · SpaceX
KDDI signed with SpaceX for next-generation Starlink Mobile V2 service, which it calls Asia's first such contract.

what happened
Japanese carrier KDDI signed a contract with SpaceX on August 10 for next-generation "Starlink Mobile V2" service, aiming to launch high-speed data and VoLTE voice calling in areas outside conventional mobile coverage, such as mountainous regions and remote islands, by the end of 2027, per KDDI's own newsroom release and Telecompaper. KDDI says the deal is Asia's first Starlink Mobile V2 service-provision contract; the next-generation satellites deliver roughly 20 times the per-satellite throughput and about 100 times the data density of the first generation through larger antennas and more communication beams, per KDDI.
why it matters
KDDI already runs au Starlink Direct on first-generation Starlink satellites; locking in V2 capacity ahead of regional rivals gives it a claim to Asia's most capable direct-to-device network once V2 service goes live, a competitive marker other Asian carriers evaluating Starlink or AST SpaceMobile partnerships will have to answer.
