Kuva Space detects illegal poppy fields in Afghanistan pilot
Kuva Space
Kuva Space's Hyperfield-1 satellites out-detected Sentinel-2 in a pilot mapping illegal opium poppy fields in Afghanistan.
what happened
Finnish hyperspectral operator Kuva Space released results from a pilot program combining its Hyperfield-1 satellite data with ESA/Copernicus Sentinel-2 imagery to screen roughly 250,000 agricultural plots in Afghanistan's Helmand Province, identifying 8,835 potential poppy fields, per Payload. The study used 363 Hyperfield images and found Kuva's data identified poppy fields with 75% accuracy versus 71% for Sentinel-2 alone, with a bigger reduction in false positives; Kuva CEO Jarkko Antila said the combination lets analysts "screen entire regions, and focus the most expensive analysis on a much smaller set of high-probability areas."
why it matters
The pilot is a concrete use case for hyperspectral EO beyond agriculture and mining: narrowing wide-area illegal-crop screening to a smaller, higher-confidence target list before commissioning expensive high-resolution follow-up imagery, a workflow that could extend to other illicit-land-use and crop-health monitoring customers.
