what happened

Estonian cybersecurity firm CybExer said Sept. 17 it will lead a 10-company European consortium developing an end-to-end capability to test and validate protected satellite communications linked to the EU's IRIS2 secure-connectivity constellation. As prime contractor, CybExer is working with CGI Estonia, CR14, DamoTech, Hellas Sat, KrattWorks, M3S Italia, Magister Solutions, Rantelon and Spaceit, companies from Estonia, Finland, Greece and Italy. Per CybExer's Kristiina Omri, the capability will test the full communications chain, from the satellite link and ground infrastructure to the end user, under disruption and adversarial conditions, including scenarios involving drone operations and command-and-control in contested environments. No contract value was disclosed.

why it matters

IRIS2 is moving into full-scale deployment as a sovereign, secure alternative for EU governments, and a dedicated adversarial-testing capability is a prerequisite before the network can be trusted for the military and critical-infrastructure use cases it is being built for. It gives a group of smaller European cybersecurity and satcom firms a foothold in the IRIS2 supply chain alongside the larger primes building the constellation itself.
