Ariane 6 turbopump anomaly caps Arianespace at six 2026 launches
Arianespace · ArianeGroup
A turbopump issue found in August will hold Arianespace to five or six Ariane 6 missions this year, short of its planned eight.

what happened
ArianeGroup and Arianespace found an anomaly in an Ariane 6 turbopump during post-flight inspections and ground testing in August, following the rocket's Aug. 27 launch of Eumetsat's MTG-I2 satellite, per SatNews and Space Intel Report. ESA has since confirmed it is aware of the delays: "ESA is aware of the delays," an agency spokesperson told European Spaceflight, though ESA declined to comment on the root cause. In a statement to European Spaceflight, ArianeGroup and Arianespace confirmed the 2026 mission schedule needs to be adjusted for additional checks now under way in the Ariane 6 production line, without confirming those checks relate to the reported turbopump anomaly. The companies said the industrial ramp-up is otherwise on track for a target rate of 9 to 10 launches a year starting as early as 2027. SatNews reported the 2026 manifest will fall to five or six missions from a planned eight; Space Intel Report reported as few as one or two more launches this year. On Oct. 15, Arianespace said the rocket's next flight, carrying 36 Amazon Leo satellites on an Ariane 64, is now targeted for no earlier than Nov. 23, after French newspaper La Tribune reported ArianeGroup had resolved the anomaly in a liquid-hydrogen turbopump first detected during an engine acceptance test before summer; an ArianeGroup spokesperson told European Spaceflight only that "the next launch has been announced today, so the situation is on track," without directly confirming the turbopump finding. The mission, previously targeted for no earlier than Oct. 7, would be Ariane 6's fifth flight of 2026 and tenth since its July 2024 debut.
why it matters
A slower Ariane 6 cadence pushes back deliveries for a backlog that already includes Amazon Leo, Eutelsat's OneWeb renewal and KT SAT's KOREASAT 9, at a moment when SpaceX has also paused new commercial Falcon 9 bookings, leaving satellite operators fewer alternate launch options for the rest of 2026.
