Northrop Grumman, True Anomaly selected for Space Force GHOST-R satellite awards
Northrop Grumman · True Anomaly
DIU and Space Force picked Northrop Grumman and True Anomaly to build GHOST-R prototype satellites for tracking GEO objects.

what happened
The Defense Innovation Unit and U.S. Space Force's Space Systems Command awarded Northrop Grumman and True Anomaly prototype contracts under the Geosynchronous High-Resolution Optical Space-Based Tactical Reconnaissance (GHOST-R) program, announced Sept. 18, per Northrop Grumman's own release and corroborating trade coverage. Northrop Grumman will build its prototype on its ESPASat-L spacecraft bus with an optical payload from TRL-11, under an accelerated 24-month schedule covering production, integration, testing and delivery; both companies' satellites are expected to launch in 2028 to demonstrate high-resolution imagery collection and weekly observations of objects in geosynchronous orbit. No dollar figure was disclosed for either award.
why it matters
A successful GHOST-R demonstration would feed into RG-XX, the Space Force's larger push to field an operational fleet of commercially built GEO reconnaissance satellites by decade's end. Picking two very different suppliers, an established prime (Northrop Grumman) and a venture-backed orbital-defense startup (True Anomaly), for the same prototype signals the Pentagon is still hedging between incumbents and newcomers on low-cost, commercially derived space domain awareness before committing to an operational buy.
