AstroForge to fly Solo AI in full autonomous control of 2027 mission
AstroForge
AstroForge says its in-house Solo AI will independently fly its Autonomy-1 spacecraft in 2027, with no ground commands.

what happened
AstroForge said Sept. 21 that Solo, a transformer-based autonomy model it built in-house, will take full control of its Autonomy-1 spacecraft, launching in 2027 on the debut flight of Stoke Space's rocket and carrying a NASA payload to study space weather. Solo will first fly in "shadow mode" aboard AstroForge's DeepSpace-2 mission, targeted for late 2026, processing spacecraft data without controlling it before Autonomy-1 hands it full command. CEO Matt Gialich said he does not plan to fly radios on Autonomy-1 that can receive commands from Earth.
why it matters
Ground-operations staffing is a major cost driver for deep-space missions; TechCrunch's reporting notes NASA's OSIRIS-REx needed 100 operators per shift. If Solo works as planned, it lowers the operations cost floor for small companies running interplanetary missions, a capability other cash-strapped deep-space operators and mission designers will watch closely.
