NuRAN Wireless pilots Starlink backhaul for rural African 4G sites
NuRAN Wireless
NuRAN Wireless is piloting licensed Starlink LEO backhaul at a Nigerian site to accelerate its rural 4G rollout.
what happened
NuRAN Wireless said Sept. 22 it is piloting licensed Starlink LEO satellite service as a backhaul solution at a single NuRAN site in Nigeria, alongside longtime partner Infratel, its first LEO integration anywhere in its network. NuRAN said it has no direct contract with Starlink or SpaceX and is accessing the service exclusively through third-party provider arrangements. NuRAN CEO said "backhaul is the key that unlocks NuRAN's next phase of growth," and the company said a successful pilot could scale to sites in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Cote d'Ivoire, Benin and Cameroon where Starlink is licensed through third-party providers. NuRAN has more than 5,000 sites under contract across Africa.
why it matters
It is a small but concrete data point on Starlink's indirect reach into rural African telecom infrastructure even where NuRAN has no direct commercial relationship with SpaceX, via third-party licensed resellers. For rural network operators facing costly or unavailable terrestrial backhaul, a successful pilot is a template other African telcos evaluating LEO backhaul will watch.
