TRL11 wins NASA contract to build cameras for SR-1 Freedom Mars mission
TRL11 · NASA
TRL11 will build imaging systems for NASA's SR-1 Freedom, the fission-powered Mars mission carrying the SkyFall helicopters, per Payload.

what happened
TRL11 received a NASA contract to build space cameras and edge-computing imaging systems for the Space Reactor-1 (SR-1) Freedom mission, a $2 billion, fission-powered interplanetary spacecraft NASA plans to launch to Mars in late 2028, per Payload. TRL11's hardware will capture, process and store high-resolution imagery during the mission, including the moment the three SkyFall helicopters deploy toward the Martian surface, and relay the photos back to Earth. TRL11 CEO Nicolaas Verheem said it will be the first time a camera the company built travels to another planet and captures images of it. NASA is also considering adding more TRL11 technology to the mission, including its VIPLink communications system, VIP1st download-prioritization software and Commander spacecraft-imaging management software, per Payload.
why it matters
SR-1 Freedom draws on a wide commercial supply chain: TRL11 for imaging joins AeroVironment and JPL on the SkyFall helicopters and Firefly Aerospace, which is separately building the mission's $13 million landing aeroshell. The award is a small but concrete entry point for a company betting on deep-space imaging business beyond Earth orbit.
