Astrolab teams with Interstellar Mapping to hunt lunar water

Interstellar Mapping will map subsurface lunar volatiles to guide where Astrolab's FLIP rover searches for water.

what happened
Astrolab is partnering with Interstellar Mapping to search for water on the Moon, marking Interstellar Mapping's first work on a US commercial rover mission, per a Payload exclusive. Interstellar Mapping will analyze subsurface conditions to locate hydrogen-bearing volatiles (water and ice), and its findings will guide where Astrolab's FLIP rover takes measurements. FLIP launches in November aboard Astrobotic's Griffin-1 lander to the lunar south pole under a NASA CLPS contract, carrying NASA payloads including a helium-3 detection camera, a laser-guided precision tracking system, a lunar dust sensor and a LiDAR for 3D surface mapping. Interstellar Mapping CEO Andrew Hazelton said "finding lunar water isn't simply a matter of going to the coldest or darkest places," per Payload.
why it matters
Locating accessible water ice is central to using the Moon as a refueling and life-support waypoint for deeper missions; a subsurface-mapping partner that can steer a rover's search improves the odds FLIP's NASA-funded instruments return a usable water detection on a single mission.
