what happened
SpaceX signed a contractual agreement with the Space Force's Joint Commercial Operations Cell giving it access to U.S. Space Command's most detailed on-orbit object catalog, including Vector Covariance Messages from the classified High Accuracy Catalog, in exchange for tracking data from SpaceX's own Stargaze star-tracker system, Breaking Defense reported Sept. 23 citing unnamed sources. A Space Force official said the data is for SpaceX's internal use only and that SpaceX cannot use it "for any sort of commercial gain or benefit." Neither the Space Force nor SpaceX responded to Breaking Defense's requests for comment.
why it matters
Commercial space-situational-awareness providers worry the classified data could indirectly sharpen the free Stargaze product SpaceX already offers operators at no charge, undercutting rivals' paid tracking and conjunction-assessment services even under the stated internal-use-only restriction. The Guardian independently confirmed the arrangement on Oct. 26, with former Traffic Coordination System for Space employee Cole Donovan warning it could make SpaceX "the de facto source for space traffic coordination within the US."
