Airtel brings Starlink satellite-to-mobile service to Uganda
Airtel Africa · SpaceX
Airtel Africa launched Starlink's direct-to-device service in Uganda, its second African market after the DRC, per Space in Africa.

what happened
Airtel Africa and Starlink launched a satellite-to-mobile connectivity service in Uganda on Sept. 24, 2026, per Space in Africa, making Uganda the second African market for the partnership after the Democratic Republic of Congo in August. Compatible Android smartphones can connect directly to Starlink's satellites without extra hardware, for light-data uses including SMS and WhatsApp messaging when standard Airtel coverage is unavailable. Customers get a free 30-day trial via the MyAirtel app, after which the service moves to eligible Airtel Uganda data bundles; iPhone availability has not been announced.
why it matters
Each new country adds another market where Airtel can sell coverage in areas terrestrial towers do not reach, extending SpaceX's direct-to-device distribution deal beyond its DRC debut. For resellers and MNOs elsewhere in Africa, it is a working template, a mobile operator selling Starlink D2D bundled into existing plans rather than as a standalone product, for the many markets still off Starlink's direct commercial map.
