Outpost launches Space Factories in-space manufacturing service
Outpost Technologies
Reentry startup Outpost introduced Space Factories, a standardized platform for manufacturing products in orbit as a service.

what happened
Outpost Technologies said Sept. 24 it is launching Space Factories, a standardized, reusable orbital manufacturing platform that customers can use to produce goods such as pharmaceuticals, semiconductors and advanced crystals in microgravity and return them to Earth, without building their own spacecraft, power and thermal systems, or reentry and recovery hardware. Outpost will be the platform's first user, planning to produce StarFiber, its metal-fluoride optical fiber that the company says achieves lower signal loss than silica fiber made on Earth, on a mission no earlier than 2028. Outpost said it has six MOUs for space-made fiber; counterparties and terms were not disclosed.
why it matters
Space Factories reframes Outpost from a reentry-capsule builder into an infrastructure-as-a-service provider for in-space manufacturing, the same standardization bet the launch industry made with rideshare: if it lowers the cost of testing whether a product benefits from microgravity, it could pull more pharmaceutical and materials customers into space manufacturing who would not otherwise build a dedicated mission.
