Planet launches Amazon.ia biodiversity monitoring initiative with 25 partners
Planet and 25 partners launched Amazon.ia, combining satellite imagery, ground data and AI to track biodiversity across the Amazon.

what happened
Planet said Sept. 24 it has co-founded Amazon.ia, a digital public good that combines Planet's satellite imagery with ground-collected sensor data and AI to monitor biodiversity and ecosystem health across the Amazon at biome scale, producing change alerts, biodiversity status reports, protected-area effectiveness assessments and evidence of ecosystem recovery. The Bezos Earth Fund granted more than $14 million across the Andes Amazon Fund and the World Resources Institute to support the initiative, which lists more than two dozen partner organizations including Microsoft, MIT, Cornell, the Smithsonian, WWF and the Wildlife Conservation Society, per Yahoo Finance.
why it matters
Amazon.ia is a data-product and partnership play rather than a satellite launch: it shows Planet monetizing its existing EO archive and AI analytics as an environmental-intelligence service for scientists, conservation groups and governments, a template it can extend to other biomes and buyers beyond this specific initiative's philanthropic funding.
