updates
- 2026-10-01Transporter-18 launched Oct. 1 and SpaceX confirmed deployment completed; Starfish's Otter is now in commissioning ahead of its NASA debris-inspection mission.
what happened
Starfish Space's first full-scale Otter satellite-servicing vehicle launched Oct. 1 on SpaceX's Transporter-18 rideshare mission from Vandenberg Space Force Base, per Via Satellite, which reported SpaceX confirmed the mission's deployment sequence had concluded. The 300 kg (660 lb) spacecraft is now in commissioning ahead of NASA's Small Spacecraft Propulsion and Inspection Capability (SSPICY) mission, a $15 million Phase III SBIR award under which Otter will close to within hundreds of meters of up to four defunct US-owned satellites to collect spin-rate, spin-axis and surface-condition data over roughly two years, per NASASpaceflight and GeekWire.
why it matters
This is Starfish's first Otter built for paying operational work rather than a demo, after selling other Otters to SSC ($37.5 million, for national-security rendezvous and proximity operations) and the Space Development Agency ($52.5 million, to deorbit defunct constellation satellites), per Payload; a working debut on NASA's own mission is a concrete proof point for those already-signed commercial and government servicing contracts.
