what happened
The European Space Agency awarded OVHcloud and CGI a 30-month contract to build Digital EO, cloud infrastructure to store and process Europe's Earth observation satellite data, the companies said Sept. 28, per Reuters. OVHcloud will supply the computing, storage and network capacity and CGI will act as architect and integrator; the system will be deployed in Italy, France and Germany, with support operations run from Poland, and will connect to existing national and European facilities rather than replace them. OVHcloud and CGI said the contract is worth a "multi-million" euro figure; ESA did not disclose an amount. ESA expects to hold more than 500 petabytes of Earth observation data by 2035, and the platform is meant to support the EU's Copernicus program and its DestinE digital-twin initiative, per Techzine. OVHcloud's own press release states the platform "will have the capability to extend to other European countries and Canada," which holds a seat on ESA's Council under a cooperation agreement.
why it matters
The award follows the European Commission's push to steer strategic cloud workloads to European providers, coming months after a separate 180 million euro cloud tender went exclusively to four European firms in April; OVHcloud CEO Octave Klaba framed the deal in those terms, saying per Reuters that "Europe absolutely must have control over the infrastructure that runs its most strategic programmes." For the ground-segment side of the EO market, it is a reminder that as Europe's satellite data volumes grow, hosting and processing that data is becoming its own EU-preference-weighted contract line, alongside the sensors and spacecraft that generate it.
