EU Council expands space threat response beyond EU satellites
European Union
The Council widened its Space Threat Response Architecture to cover threats against any member state's space assets.

what happened
The Council of the EU adopted Decision 2026/2195 on Sept. 28, revising the 2021 decision that created the EU's Space Threat Response Architecture (STRA), per the European External Action Service. The prior decision covered only threats to EU Space Programme assets such as Galileo and Copernicus; the revision extends STRA to threats against the security of the EU or any individual member state, including anti-satellite attacks, jamming, cyberattacks against space infrastructure, and supply-chain disruptions, and mandates yearly STRA-X exercises to test the mechanism.
why it matters
STRA coordinates a collective EU response, including the High Representative's power to propose targeted restrictive measures, when a space asset is attacked or interfered with. Widening it from EU-flagged systems to any member state's satellites brings commercial operators headquartered in the EU, not just EU-program satellites, inside the same response framework for jamming, cyberattacks and anti-satellite threats.
