what happened
Anthropic agreed to pay up to $120.5 billion for compute capacity from SpaceX through 2029, per the company's Form S-1 registration statement filed publicly with the SEC on Oct. 26, $36 billion more than the $84.5 billion previously reported from a confidential draft of the same filing, per CryptoBriefing and TipRanks. The agreements, signed and amended between May and October 2026, cover Nvidia GPUs delivered via SpaceX's Colossus facilities, with payments reaching roughly $3.1 billion a month once full capacity is delivered in December 2026; initial non-cancelable periods run through January and March 2027, after which either party may terminate with 90 days' written notice. Bloomberg reported Oct. 29, citing a person familiar with the matter, that Anthropic accounted for about 34.5% of SpaceX's third-quarter revenue, overtaking the US government as SpaceX's single largest customer, per TheNextWeb's summary of the report. Musk said on X Oct. 31 that SpaceX's Colossus 2 campus is adding two more clusters, nicknamed Gun Range (220,000 Nvidia GB300 chips for training, on a former police department gun range SpaceX bought, targeted operational by end of November) and Spam (about 200,000 GB300 chips for inference, on the site of a former Hormel storage building, targeted for December), per TeslaNorth, bringing Colossus 2's total capacity to around 1.2 million Nvidia Blackwell-generation chips by year-end.
why it matters
The S-1's public figure confirms SpaceX's AI-compute business is scaling into one of its largest revenue lines alongside Starlink and launch, financing Musk's bet that compute leasing can offset the capital intensity of chip purchases; the size of the commitment, and its early-2027 exit window, will shape how much leverage either side has if AI demand or GPU supply shifts before then.
