what happened
Varda closed a $251 million Series D led by Lux Capital and Natural Capital, with Founders Fund, Khosla Ventures, Caffeinated Capital, General Catalyst, 8090 Industries, Giant Step and Also Capital also participating, the company said. The round values Varda at $1.6 billion and brings the total capital it has raised to nearly $600 million. Varda's W-8 and W-9 capsules launched on SpaceX's Transporter-18 rideshare Oct. 1, giving the company two spacecraft operating in orbit at once for the first time; a third capsule is set to follow later this month, and all three are due to reenter at Southern Launch's Koonibba Test Range in the South Australian Outback before Christmas.
why it matters
A quarter-billion-dollar round, Varda's largest to date, signals investors see in-space pharmaceutical manufacturing as commercially durable rather than a one-off demonstration. Varda's reentry capsules also serve semiconductor makers and national-security customers testing hypersonic reentry tech, giving the company multiple paying markets beyond drugmakers. Varda says it plans seven more missions in 2027, two each in the first and second quarters and three on a single rocket in the third, a shift CEO Will Bruey described as moving from treating each mission as a one-off to running a fleet.
