Charter Space raises $5M seed for space insurance brokerage
Charter Space
In-orbit insurer Charter Space raised a $5 million seed round to expand its AI-underwritten space insurance brokerage.

what happened
Charter Space raised a $5 million seed round led by Crystal Venture Partners, with QED, Blank Ventures, Gaingels, Hustle Fund and others participating, the company said. The California-based startup operates Charter Interplanetary Risk Corporation (CIRC), a nationally licensed insurance brokerage that pairs an AI-powered underwriting tool with its Ubik mission-management software to speed policy approval; CIRC has insured more than 50 companies across the US space and defense sector and carries a backlog of more than $35 million in gross written premiums. The round brings Charter's total funding to $8 million since its 2021 founding.
why it matters
Charter's CEO says roughly 97% of spacecraft in orbit fly uninsured today; faster, AI-assisted underwriting could pull more operators into coverage as launch cadence rises and insurers price collision and reentry risk more aggressively. For smallsat operators and in-space-servicing startups, cheaper and faster insurance access removes a real barrier to financing a mission.
