ICEYE and Nokia partner on sovereign satellite communications
ICEYE · Nokia
ICEYE and Nokia will jointly build sovereign LEO satellite-communications systems that let governments own and control their own network.

what happened
ICEYE and Nokia said they will jointly develop secure, sovereign broadband LEO satellite-communications systems for governments, giving nations ownership and control of the satellites, ground segment and terminals rather than depending on a foreign commercial operator. The companies plan to combine Nokia's secure networking technology with ICEYE's satellite manufacturing and operations experience to deliver high-throughput, low-latency connectivity for defense, border security, emergency services and disaster response; the first communications satellites are expected to launch in 2028.
why it matters
The pitch is explicitly an alternative to relying on a single foreign commercial operator: ICEYE CEO Rafal Modrzewski said nations must be able to "fully own and control their communications, without dependency on a foreign commercial operator's terms of service." For governments wary of depending on SpaceX or another single provider for sovereign connectivity, a European manufacturer-telecom pairing offers an alternate supply chain, though with a 2028 first-launch target it won't compete for business for years.
