Rheinmetall and Argotec launch first satellite for air-defense surveillance
Rheinmetall · Argotec
Rheinmetall and Argotec launched their first jointly built satellite, designed to detect ground-based signs of emerging airborne threats.
what happened
Rheinmetall said Oct. 2 that it and Italian space company Argotec launched their first satellite Oct. 1 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 from Vandenberg. The companies describe the spacecraft as the first element of a planned constellation for military air-defense surveillance, with sensors aimed at detecting ground-based indicators of emerging airborne threats rather than conventional ground mapping; data will be processed with AI support before integration into national defense systems. Rheinmetall said a second satellite is planned for 2028.
why it matters
The launch marks Rheinmetall's entry into satellite manufacturing alongside its established defense-hardware business, part of a wider pattern of European defense primes building in-house space capabilities rather than buying imagery from commercial EO operators.
