what happened

Amtrak is testing Starlink satellite connectivity as part of the Wi-Fi backhaul mix on its new Airo trainsets running the Pacific Northwest Cascades route, per Runway Girl Network, which observed the previously undisclosed feature while riding the train. The satellite link is meant to supplement or replace cellular service where it is weak in the U.S. and to serve as the sole connection in Canada, where Amtrak's current provider bills by the gigabyte for data and Wi-Fi is typically switched off to avoid cost.

why it matters

A successful Cascades trial could let Amtrak offer Wi-Fi on long-distance routes for the first time and would extend Starlink's connectivity business from aviation and maritime into passenger rail, a transportation mode it has not yet served commercially.
