Planet launches Populace, a 40-meter global population map with Microsoft and IHME
Planet, Microsoft's AI for Good Lab, and IHME built Populace, a continuously updated 40-meter global population density map.

what happened
Planet, the University of Washington's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), and Microsoft's AI for Good Lab introduced Populace on October 12, a global population density map at 40-meter gridded resolution updated quarterly, per Planet's own announcement. Planet's Dove satellite basemaps feed Microsoft machine-learning models that detect human structures, which IHME combines with census and survey data to estimate population. Populace is free of charge under noncommercial terms to nonprofits and academic researchers; governments and private-sector organizations can access it under commercial-use terms, per Planet.
why it matters
The product turns Planet's basemap imagery into a licensable population dataset sold directly to governments and companies, adding a commercial data layer beyond raw imagery sales. It is another case of an EO operator monetizing AI-derived products rather than pixels, a model other imagery providers are also leaning on for recurring revenue.
