Planet's Sinergise wins ESA contract to build Slovenia's Space Resilience Node
ESA selected Planet's Sinergise unit to build a 12-month pilot that automates satellite-based disaster monitoring for Slovenia.
what happened
The European Space Agency selected Planet Labs subsidiary Sinergise Solutions to build the Slovenia Space Resilience Node, a 12-month pilot project under Element 2 of ESA's European Resilience from Space Earth Observation programme, per Planet. The system will autonomously analyze open Copernicus data and PlanetScope imagery for Slovenia's Administration for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief within the Ministry of Defence, triggering a high-resolution tasking request, including through Planet's Pelican fleet, when hazard thresholds are detected. The initial prototype targets wildfire management across Slovenia's 20,000 square kilometers, with Planet saying the architecture is adaptable to track floods, landslides, and other environmental hazards.
why it matters
The contract extends ESA's European Resilience from Space programme beyond the ICEYE/Leonardo-led Element 1 EOGS architecture studies into a second element: automated tip-and-cue monitoring pilots for individual member states. For Planet, it is a template the company can pitch to other European civil-protection agencies, pairing its wide-area PlanetScope archive with tasked Pelican high-resolution follow-up as a packaged government service.
