Hisdesat gets early release of €65.8 million in Spain's PAZ 2 satellite funding
Hisdesat · Airbus Defence and Space
Spain advanced €65.8 million in PAZ 2 radar-satellite financing to Hisdesat, lifting 2026's allocation to €245.6 million.

what happened
Spain's Ministry of Industry and Tourism published Order ITU/920/2026 (dated Aug. 27, published in the official state gazette Sept. 3) advancing €65,775,300 of financing to Hisdesat for the PAZ 2 radar Earth observation satellite program from 2029 into 2026, raising the program's 2026 allocation from €179.8 million to €245.6 million while cutting 2029's share by the same amount. The order modifies a €1,011,850,000 direct loan Spain granted Hisdesat under Royal Decree 768/2025 to develop PAZ 2's two SAR satellites, built by Airbus Defence and Space with Hisdesat as operator. Hisdesat requested the change on April 15, arguing the original schedule would create "significant timing differences" between fund disbursements and the payments it owes, per the order. Both PAZ 2 satellites, intended to replace and expand Spain's existing PAZ spacecraft for the Spanish Armed Forces with commercial imagery also available, are expected to be operational by 2031.
why it matters
PAZ 2 is a sovereign SAR constellation program, and its funding reallocation is a direct commercial signal for Airbus Defence and Space, PAZ 2's prime contractor, and for Hisdesat as the program's operator: more financing arriving sooner than planned supports the program's 2031 operational target. European governments building national radar-imaging capacity are a steady contract base for Airbus's SAR manufacturing line, alongside the commercial SAR demand ICEYE and others compete for.
