Seraphim says space startups raised a record $20.8 billion across 216 deals in Q3, led by launch and infrastructure bets.
what happened
Space-focused investment firm Seraphim's own Space Index found that space startups raised a record $20.8 billion in the third quarter across a record 216 deals, up from $7.4 billion and 140 deals in the second quarter. Launch and broader space-access companies attracted $16.4 billion across 120 deals, while satellite communications, Earth observation, and other space-service companies raised $4 billion; excluding Blue Origin's $10 billion financing, investment still reached an all-time high of $10.8 billion. North America accounted for roughly 70% of year-to-date global funding, while China recorded a quarterly high of $3.3 billion across 49 deals. The quarter's largest individual rounds were Hadrian's $1.37 billion Series D, Stoke Space's $1 billion Series E, and K2 Space's $500 million Series D. Trailing twelve months through Q3, Seraphim counted $40.1 billion invested across 666 deals, an average deal size of $137 million and a median of $9.8 million. Seraphim Space VP Lucas Bishop said "capital is following evidence of commercial and institutional demand, not just residual IPO enthusiasm."
why it matters
The scale and composition of the quarter, heavily weighted toward launch and infrastructure rather than applications, points to investors backing capacity-building (vehicles, manufacturing, ground systems) ahead of the demand that capacity is meant to serve. For operators and resellers, a market this well-capitalized also means more competitors and suppliers reaching production scale sooner.
