ESA signs NAVISP contracts for resilient rail and aviation positioning
ESA · Airbus Defence and Space · Intecs · Creotech Geo
ESA backed Intecs, Airbus and Creotech Geo to develop 5G-based rail positioning and optical-fibre aviation timing.

what happened
ESA signed new NAVISP contracts on Oct. 14 at the NAVISP Industry Days in Rome with three European companies to develop technologies for resilient rail and aviation positioning, per ESA's own announcement. Intecs Technologies of Italy and Airbus Defence and Space GmbH of Germany will each explore the use of 5G signals for positioning in rail applications. Creotech Geo P.S.A. of Poland will develop a high-precision multilateration system for aviation that uses optical-fibre-based time transfer. ESA's announcement did not state contract values.
why it matters
NAVISP funds early-stage positioning, navigation and timing technology that can feed into commercial transport and aviation products; the contracts are a market-access signal for the three named companies and for other suppliers in Europe's resilient-PNT supply chain, even without a stated contract value.
