what happened

UARX Space's OSSIE-D, the Spanish company's first orbital transfer vehicle, launched October 1 on SpaceX's Transporter-18 rideshare and immediately suffered a communications blackout, per SpaceNews. UARX traced the cause to a configuration error on its ground-station service interface; two days after launch, with the spacecraft's battery life limited, the company sent deployment commands without confirmed two-way contact to prioritize customer payloads, co-founder and CTO Andrés Villa Granata said. Once the ground-station configuration was fixed, communications and all spacecraft systems returned to nominal, and at least 10 PocketQubes had deployed by October 15, including AMSAT-Deutschland's three ERMINAZ-2 units, per SpaceNews and AMSAT.

why it matters

OSSIE-D was also the first flight test of UARX's SAU&RON deployment rings, with Dawn Aerospace's docking port still aboard; a resolved, disclosed anomaly on a maiden OTV flight is a data point for rideshare customers evaluating a still-young orbital transfer vehicle market.
