ESA loses Space Rider test model in failed drop test
ESA · Thales Alenia Space · Avio
A parafoil failure destroyed ESA's full-scale Space Rider drop-test model, pushing first flight from Q1 to Q2 2028.

what happened
ESA confirmed that a full-scale Space Rider test model was lost earlier in October during the reusable spaceplane's final system-level drop-test campaign, per European Spaceflight. An ESA spokesperson said an anomaly occurred during deployment of the test model's parafoil, which would have let it glide safely to its landing area; the vehicle could not be recovered. It is the second setback in the campaign this year, after a May test was aborted during the captive-ascent phase with the test vehicle recovered safely that time. An independent investigation into the root cause is under way.
why it matters
Space Rider is Europe's planned reusable orbital cargo return vehicle, meant to launch on an upgraded Vega C and compete for the kind of in-space-return demand SpaceX and others are chasing. ESA still targets an inaugural flight in 2028, but the target slipped from the first to the second quarter, the program's latest delay in a project ESA has been developing since 2015. For companies planning payloads around Space Rider's debut, the schedule risk just grew.
