what happened

SpaceX's Q3 2026 earnings release, filed as Exhibit 99.1 to an SEC Form 8-K, reported total revenue of $14.575 billion, up 161% from $5.576 billion a year earlier, and net income of $4.404 billion compared with a net loss of $1.054 billion in Q3 2025. By segment, revenue was $7.560 billion for Super Intelligence (SI, its computing and AI business, up 830%), $5.248 billion for Connectivity including Starlink (up 69%), and $1.767 billion for Space (up 6%). Starlink reached 13.6 million consumer subscribers as of September 30. On the earnings call, Musk said the next Starship test flight, IFT-15, is planned for next month and will attempt catching both the booster and the ship, per SpacePolicyOnline's Marcia Smith. SpaceX's Form 10-Q also disclosed a $561 million unrealized investment gain on its equity stake in Elon Musk's The Boring Company, booked after Boring closed a financing round backed by the United Arab Emirates at roughly a $23 billion valuation in September; because SpaceX holds the stake under the fair-value option, no cash changed hands, but the markup flowed into other income and added to net income, per TeslaNorth's reading of the filing. On the same call, CFO Bret Johnsen said SpaceX expects to spend $35 billion to $40 billion on capital projects in the fourth quarter, roughly double the $19.6 billion spent in the third quarter, and that "at current pricing, new compute deployments are generating a payback of less than a year"; Musk added that a six-month payback "is not impossible" next year, per TIKR and 24/7 Wall St.'s separate write-ups of the call. President and COO Gwynne Shotwell said Starlink Mobile, the satellite-to-phone service offered through partner carriers such as T-Mobile's T-Satellite, surpassed 22 million monthly users as of quarter-end, up 37% quarter over quarter, and that SpaceX's near-term priority is flying the Mobile V2 constellation through 2027 before switching on its own carrier service on its own spectrum in early 2028. Musk separately told investors "what this implies for SpaceX annual recurring revenue by the end of '27 is somewhere between $500 billion and $1 trillion," an acceleration from his earlier public targets of reaching $1 trillion in revenue by 2030, per the call transcript.

why it matters

This is SpaceX's first profitable quarter as a public company, and the first in which its computing segment outearned Connectivity, the Starlink-led business that has anchored its valuation story to date. For launch and connectivity competitors, it signals SpaceX now runs an AI-compute business bigger than its satellite internet arm, and that capital and attention may follow accordingly. The Boring Company markup is a reminder that a meaningful share of SpaceX's reported profit this quarter came from an accounting gain on a sister company's funding round, not from operations. The doubled Q4 capex guidance shows how much of that trajectory now rests on AI-compute rental pricing holding up, since SpaceX itself says the spending only pays back if current spot rates persist. Starlink Mobile's 22 million users, all routed through partner carriers rather than a paid SpaceX plan, is the clearest evidence yet of the scale SpaceX is building toward its own 2028 carrier launch, while Musk's trillion-dollar 2027 run-rate target, if it holds, would compress his own prior 2030 timeline by three years.
