Corrected: the redesigned structure cut 880 kg, beating Airbus's 800 kg target; an earlier figure covered only the shipped hardware.

updates

  • 2026-10-23European Spaceflight corrected its own report: the Vulcain Aft Bay redesign cut 880 kg, beating Airbus's 800 kg target, not falling short of it as first reported.

what happened

Airbus Netherlands shipped Flight Model 16 (FM16), the first lightweight Vulcain Aft Bay built for Ariane 6's Block 2 upgrade, to ArianeGroup in France via Rotterdam. The aft bay is the structural assembly that supports the Vulcain 2.1 engine and transfers its thrust into the rocket's main stage; the redesign cuts 55 mm of length, and per a October 22 correction from European Spaceflight, reduces the complete Vulcain Aft Bay structure's mass by 880 kg, exceeding the roughly 800 kg reduction target Airbus set in July 2024. The outlet's original report had described a 400 kg reduction as falling short of that target; Airbus Netherlands President Rob Postma clarified that the 400 kg figure applied only to the hardware assembly shipped to ArianeGroup, not the full redesigned structure. Airbus says the part is due to fly for the first time on an Ariane 6 mission in 2027.

why it matters

Block 2 is ArianeGroup's incremental path to a more competitive Ariane 6, and every kilogram shaved off the airframe adds payload margin for European institutional and commercial customers without a new vehicle program. The corrected figures show Airbus actually beat its original weight-reduction target, a stronger signal for Ariane 6's performance roadmap than first reported.
