Astroscale wins £15M UK MoD contract for Project LEDA defense satellite
Astroscale · BAE Systems · Open Cosmos
Astroscale will build, launch and operate a spacecraft for the UK's Project LEDA to study orbital rendezvous threats.

what happened
The UK Ministry of Defence named Astroscale UK prime contractor for Project LEDA, a program to manufacture, launch and operate a spacecraft that will advance the UK's understanding of rendezvous-and-proximity-operations threats from other satellites, per Via Satellite. The contract is worth 15 million pounds ($20 million); BAE Systems and Open Cosmos will support as key partners, per Via Satellite. The contract was signed Sept. 29 and publicly announced in late October, per Aerospace Global News. UK Space Command's Tony Williams said the program builds on Astroscale's ELSA-d and ADRAS-J rendezvous and inspection missions, per Via Satellite.
why it matters
LEDA converts Astroscale's debris-removal and satellite-servicing rendezvous expertise into a paid defense contract, a day after the company's own executives were publicly pitching an unfunded pan-European 'bodyguard' satellite concept built on the same proximity-operations technology. The UK deal gives that pitch its first paying government customer and a concrete price point other potential buyers can measure against.
