Tanzania signs satellite cooperation deal with Russia's Roscosmos
Tanzania and Russia's Roscosmos signed a framework deal to launch Tanzania's first Earth observation satellite in March 2027.
what happened
Roscosmos Director General Dmitry Bakanov and a Tanzanian communications ministry official signed a space cooperation framework memorandum on Oct. 28 at the third Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow, per Space in Africa. Russia will launch Tanzania's first Earth remote-sensing satellite in March 2027, and the agreement also covers Tanzanian-built spacecraft launching on Russian rockets, Earth observation data sharing, Tanzanian ground stations, and Russian support for a new Tanzanian space agency, per Space in Africa. TASS, citing Ugandan outlet ChimpReports, separately reported the same March 2027 launch timeline.
why it matters
Russia is competing with China for sovereign space-infrastructure deals across Africa; a Tanzanian Earth observation program built and launched with Russian help would give Roscosmos a reference customer and a foothold in East African ground-segment and data-sharing arrangements that Western and Chinese EO vendors are also pursuing on the continent.
