what happened

SpaceX selected Qualcomm Technologies to supply Dragonwing QRU100 radio units and QDU100 baseband units, plus Layer 1 software, for Starlink Mobile's planned US terrestrial 5G network, per a Nov. 4 Qualcomm release distributed via Business Wire. The radios use 64-transmit/64-receive Massive MIMO antennas and will be deployed at tens of thousands of cell sites under a multi-year agreement, with nationwide rollout starting in 2027. Qualcomm EVP Durga Malladi said building a nationwide network "demands high performance and power efficiency at every site," and Starlink SVP Michael Nicolls said the deal would help SpaceX "accelerate our timeline," per The Next Web. On Qualcomm's fiscal Q4 earnings call, CEO Cristiano Amon called the deal "a significant win for our infrastructure business and the beginning of a strategic relationship with tremendous potential," saying revenue will "start to appear as we exit fiscal 2027," with meaningful contribution landing in fiscal 2028, per Yahoo Finance's coverage of the call.

why it matters

The deal names SpaceX's equipment vendor for the ground-based cellular buildout underpinning its push to become a nationwide carrier, a role Starlink had not previously assigned to a named supplier. Light Reading, which calls it Qualcomm's largest network deal since 3G, notes SpaceX holds roughly 80 MHz of spectrum against T-Mobile's 400 MHz, meaning the network's competitiveness will depend on the Massive MIMO technology closing that gap rather than on spectrum holdings alone. Qualcomm's own fiscal-2028 revenue framing gives outside observers the first supplier-side timeline for when the buildout turns into real equipment revenue.
