Ubotica's CogniSAT-6 demonstrates onboard AI satellite re-tasking
Ubotica · Open Cosmos
Ubotica says its CogniSAT-6 satellite spotted a cruise ship, then scheduled its own follow-up image two days later with no ground input.

what happened
Ubotica said its AI payload aboard CogniSAT-6, a 6U CubeSat designed and operated by Open Cosmos, captured an image of a cruise ship in the Pacific Ocean in early October and autonomously scheduled a follow-up image of the same location two days later, confirming the ship had left, without any instruction from the ground. Ubotica calls the capability "Autonomous Scheduling," announced Nov. 4.
why it matters
Letting a satellite decide what to re-image based on what it already saw, rather than waiting for a ground station to task it, shortens the loop between a first observation and a confirming one. Ubotica says the approach could support faster maritime surveillance and disaster response; for EO resellers and analysts, it is a marker of onboard autonomy moving from a lab capability toward operational tasking.
