The U.S. Space Force's Space Systems Command awarded SpaceX a $2.29 billion Other Transaction Authority agreement on May 26, 2026 to develop the Space Data Network (SDN) Backbone, a proliferated low Earth orbit constellation built on SpaceX's Starshield satellites, per Breaking Defense and DefenseScoop. SpaceX must deliver a fully operational prototype by the end of 2027. The SDN Backbone, formerly known as MILNET, is meant to provide high-capacity, low-latency data transport linking sensors to shooters and will work alongside the Space Development Agency's Transport Layer as part of the Golden Dome missile-defense architecture, per DefenseScoop. Ryan Frazier, acting Space Force portfolio acquisition executive, said the award "leverages the best of commercial innovation and delivers a strong foundation for the SDN mission set," per DefenseScoop.
