what happened

The U.S. Space Force's Space Systems Command awarded SpaceX a contract worth nearly $4.16 billion on May 29, 2026 for the initial phase of the Space-Based Airborne Moving Target Indicator (SB-AMTI) program, per Via Satellite and Air Force Technology. The competitive Other Transaction Authority award, structured with an indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity framework, is projected to field a satellite constellation by 2028 that tracks airborne threats including aircraft, cruise missiles, and hypersonic weapons globally. Col. Ryan Frazier, the program's acquisition executive, said the system will give "the Joint Force sustained battlespace awareness of contested airspace," per Air Force Technology, and that Space Systems Command is "beginning development and integration efforts immediately to meet the program's rapid deployment milestones," per Via Satellite.

why it matters

SB-AMTI is meant to give the Joint Force persistent tracking of contested airspace without relying on aircraft near advanced air defenses. This initial award, three days after SpaceX's $2.29 billion SDN Backbone contract, brought SpaceX's known Golden Dome-related awards to roughly $6.45 billion at the time, and it set the price and technical bar that other vendors, including Rocket Lab and STR's later $615 million SB-AMTI award, are competing against for the program's follow-on tranches.
