what happened

ESA awarded Thales Alenia Space an initial €700 million contract on June 10, 2026 at ILA Berlin to build two Sentinel-1 Next Generation radar Earth observation satellites for the Copernicus program, per Thales Alenia Space's own release and SpaceNews. Airbus Defence and Space will supply the C-band SAR instruments under a separate €345 million contract; the new satellites improve ground resolution from 5x20 meters to 5x5 meters and widen the swath from 250 km to 400 km, with first launch expected around 2034.

why it matters

It locks in Europe's next-generation radar Earth observation capability and a nine-figure, multi-year workshare for Thales Alenia Space and Airbus, the two dominant European satellite primes, ahead of the current Sentinel-1 fleet's eventual retirement.
